The Opportunity

To help continue fuel our growth, we are looking for a detail-oriented, goal-driven, high-energy, Database Administrator  to expand our Technology team.Our Technology team goes above and beyond to ensure our software systems are robust and highly maintainable. We are a 24/7 operation that requires on-call coverage to serve any technical incidents that may arise. This role will report into the Director of Technology. This is a full-time position in our Gastown Vancouver HQ, walking distance from shops, restaurants, and public transit. Compensation is based on experience and includes stock options and benefits.

As a part of our Technology team you will...

  • Actively maintain the health and performance of our MySQL database systems
  • Identify flaws in MySQL databases and RDS, and find ways to remediate any issues
  • Profile SQL statements to then analyze and tune execution plans
  • Create, review and approve all scripts and queries to be performed on production database environments
  • Understand database security models and best practices, and ensure these are implemented and monitored to secure our data
  • Together with our Software Engineers and QA, you will share an on-call rotation and be an escalation contact for service incidents
  • Communicate with key stakeholders on planned changes, incidents and service improvement plans
  • Secure all key PII assets according to our ISO standards and security policies
  • Manage database and systems backups and migrations

We’re looking for someone who has...

  • BSc degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent and 5+ years of solid experience as a Database Administrator in 24×7 uptime environment
  • Solid hands-on experience working with and supporting MySQL, SQL Server or Oracle database systems
  • Solid experience working with MySQL Workbench, dbForce Studio, Aqua Data or other UI tools to manage and tune databases
  • Hands-on knowledge of database replication, backup and restore
  • Demonstrated experience working with large databases
  • Experience deploying and installing database software upgrades, patches and fixes
  • Experience installing and setting up databases
  • Solid knowledge of database systems architecture, schemas, authentication, permissions and buffers / cache
  • Good understanding of Software Development Life Cycle, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
  • Good understanding and experience working with high availability, high performance, multi-data center systems and hybrid cloud environments
  • Comfortable with Agile methodologies and working closely within small teams
  • Experience in roles of release & build operations, DevOps, managed large-scale infrastructure, etc.
  • Strong experience with deploying and managing SaaS and other hosted products and environments
  • Strong scripting skills - shell or others
  • Strong communication skills verbal and written with the ability to build relationships and influence
  • Clear customer focus and understanding how their actions directly impact the experience our customers receive
  • Good knowledge of modern Linux or Windows Server operating systems

It’s a bonus if you have...

  • Experience with AWS DynamoDB or RDS
